2016 VW Jetta GLI MOMO Edition debuts at SEMA Show

Article by Christian Andrei, on November 3, 2015

The wait is finally over! Volkswagen has confirmed that it will introduce a MOMO Edition of the sports compact, the VW Jetta GLI 2.0T in 2016. Frequently referred to as OEM-plus, the new vehicle presents the same advantages as the turbocharged VW sedan but it’s clearly designed to be much sportier.

The VW Jetta GLI 2.0T boasts an Italian feel, bold 19” MOMO light alloy road wheels, a stylish MOMO steering wheel, and a vibrant red and yellow color interior. MOMO’s “mesh” design is making a comeback on the 19 x 8.5” MOMO Revenge wheels after nearly 3 decades.

Available in matte anthracite and matte black, it is a split-10 spoke wheel concaved in the center and comes with raised cap detail. The new MOMO Revenge EVO wheel that’s set to come out in 2016 is sharp too but it comes with a new finish.

The new MOMO Revenge wheels, which are wrapped with 235/35 ZR19 Pirelli P Zero high-performance tires, are a perfect fit to the GLI fenders. The lowered sidewalls enable accurate turn-in and drivers can enjoy improved handling with H&R suspension upgrades.

Upgrades include the H&R Street Performance coilovers at each corner and front/rear sway bars to reduce body roll. With the added coilovers, ride height can be tuned – providing GLI with an optical advantage and a flexible ride.

The new yellow 14.4” diameter cross-drilled, two-piece front rotors and monobloc four-piston calipers are provided by Italian company Brembo.

VW Golf R rear calipers are also painted yellow to go with the overall color scheme. The braking system will be upgraded to larger 12.2” Golf R rotors which provided the Jetta GLI great stopping power and reliable performance.

A stainless steel cat-back exhaust from Milltek Sport is added to improve breathing and create a refined, sporty sound to the powerful 210hp 2.0T four-cylinder engine. The 2016 VW GLI comes with a limited edition of MOMO GT50 Anniversario steering wheel with yellow trim detail which is a perfect match to the interior.

Yellow trim stripe is visible throughout the Jetta’s door panels and dashboard. It used to be red but the color was changed to go with the MOMO steering wheel. Some of the red stitching on all seats, shift boot and e-brake boot were changed to yellow to match the yellow and red theme.

A vehicle information display from P3 cars is added in the driver’s side air vent. Interestingly, it can’t be seen when the ignition is turned off. While driving, information will be shown on the display including turbo boost, outside temperature, 0-60mph timer, coolant temperature, exhaust gas temperature throttle position, speed, etc.

The display is specially designed to match the illumination of the VW. Various Volkswagen Accessories are also included such as the cargo grips, roof rack, trunk liner, personalized floor mats, first aid kit, doorsill protectors, a cargo net, and many more.

With its recent 50-year anniversary celebration, MOMO is reigniting its impact on the North American market. One of its strategies is the implementation of a successful motorsports program that assists with product development. Henrique Cisneros, the company principal, ranked second in the GTA class of the Pirelli World Challenge while driving a Ferrari 458 Italia GT3.

MOMO EDITION 2016 VW JETTA GLI DEBUTS AT SEMA

There are many questions that can be prefaced by “What if…” and this 2016 VW Jetta GLI 2.0T is the answer to the question, “What if Volkswagen were to offer a MOMO Edition of its successful sports compact.”

The result is a vehicle that is best described as OEM-plus. It maintains all of the benefits of the turbocharged VW sedan, but gives it greater focus for the sports-oriented driver. It also boasts a dash of Italian style, with aggressive 19” MOMO light alloy road wheels, an attractive MOMO steering wheel and a vibrant interior treatment based on MOMO’s signature red and yellow color scheme.

The 19 x 8.5” MOMO Revenge wheels represent the first “mesh” wheel design from MOMO in almost 30 years.
It is a split-10 spoke wheel with a concave center and raised cap detail. It is available in matte anthracite, as used here, and matte black. The new MOMO Revenge EVO wheel, which will offer the same sharp design but a brand new finish, will be released in 2016.

With an aggressive offset, the MOMO Revenge wheels fill the GLI fenders perfectly. The wheels are fitted with 235/35 ZR19 Pirelli P Zero high-performance tires. The low-profile sidewalls allow precise cornering turn-in and enable experienced drivers to enjoy the improved handling offered by H&R suspension upgrades. These include H&R Street Performance coilovers at each corner, as well as front and rear sway bars to reduce body roll. The coilovers allow the ride height to be tuned, give the GLI an optical advantage, as well as a supple ride.

Another great Italian company, Brembo, provided the 14.4” diameter cross-drilled, two-piece front rotors and the monobloc four-piston calipers. These were supplied in yellow to maintain the overall color scheme, with the VW Golf R rear calipers painted to match. Using larger 12.2” Golf R rotors, this comprehensive braking upgrade endows the Jetta GLI with phenomenal stopping power and consistent performance.

The powerful 210hp 2.0T four-cylinder engine benefits from improved breathing and a refined, sporty sound thanks to a stainless steel cat-back exhaust from Milltek Sport.

The 2016 VW GLI is incredibly well equipped and the interior benefits from a limited edition MOMO GT50 Anniversario steering wheel with yellow trim detail. Introduced to celebrate the recent anniversary, this stylish steering wheel is perfectly suited to the VW interior.

The yellow color scheme is continued by the trim stripe that flows around the Jetta’s door panels and dashboard. Originally red, this was painted to match the MOMO steering wheel. Similarly, some of the red stitching on all four seats, shift boot and e-brake boot was changed to yellow to repeat the yellow and red theme.

Sporty drivers will appreciate the addition of a vehicle information display in the driver’s side air vent. Produced by P3 Cars, the display is practically invisible when the ignition is off. While running, the display shows everything from turbo boost and exhaust gas temperature, to a 0-60mph timer, coolant temperature, throttle position, outside temperature, speed and more. It is designed to match the illumination of the VW, adding further to its integration.

Other additions include a number of items from the Volkswagen Accessories range. The items include the roof rack, first aid kit, trunk liner, personalized floor mats, doorsill protectors, a cargo net, cargo grips and much more.
