The GLK Rally Racer Hybrid by RENNtech features a 3.5 liter V6 petrol engine working alongside an electric motor, thereby allowing the car to use 54 Nm more torque when needed. This impressive torque is especially useful when the GLK Rally Racer Hybrid by RENNtech is coming off the line or out of a corner.
Moreover, this hybrid drive is certainly advantageous when the vehicle is tackling higher altitudes, where conventional combustion engines typical have difficulties in breathing simply because they are air dependent.
Tuning works on the vehicle's base 3.5 liter V6 unit included the use of parts from the newest high-performance Mercedes-Benz 3.5 liter V6 Sport engine -- a special intake manifold, composite air intake and RENNtech ECU software as well as cams and cylinder heads, to which RENNtech installed its own long-tube headers.
All of these changes have allowed the modified V6 to produce around 350 hp, not including the power provided from the accompanying 72-volt electric motor powered by 12-volt plug-in batteries. The tuner is currently working on a nickel-hydride solution with regenerative charging to increase range.
HartmutFeyhl, founder and president of RENNtech, described the GLK Rally Racer Hybrid as a fully functioning test bed that will be used as a proof-of-concept to be developed and enhanced throughout next year. Feyhl added that the Rally Racer is not only about aggressive looks but also about performance, thus it is a powerful and exciting package.
He noted that despite the increase in performance levels, the Rally Racer is still fuel efficient, even more than the original GLK model. Since the GLK Rally Racer Hybrid is designed and developed to run fast over rough terrain, a number of creature comforts were taken out, making it much lighter than a standard GLK.
For instance, RENNtech removed of most of the sound insulation and replaced the standard Mercedes-Benz seats with lightweight carbon-fiber buckets. Moreover, RENNtech installed a full roll cage while shifting a number of components towards the back of the Rally Racer Hybrid to pave way for a near perfect 50:50 front-to-rear weight ratio.
This improves its handling especially on tight, demanding rally stages. Handling has been also improved by installing a custom coil-over suspension package, which was made to RENNtech specs by suspension expert KW.
This custom coil-over suspension package allows certain modifications in terms of height, rake and damping rate, as well as camber and toe-in. Taking care of stopping power for the Rally Racer is an in-house RENNtech brake combo that includes massive 412mm, two-piece rotors with eight-piston calipers at the front, and 356mm discs with four-pot calipers at the rear.
GLK Rally Racer Hybrid sits on lightweight 20-inch three-piece, five-spoke RENNtech wheels (in a Sniper Gray anthracite finish) wrapped in NT05 275/40 20 and NT05 315/35 20 Nitto tires at the front and rear, respectively.
The body shell has been modified to hold the larger wheels and brakes and to widen the track, as well as to enhance the Rally Racer's overall aerodynamic efficiency. In developing the package for the Rally Racer Hybrid, RENNtech employed the latest Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
This allowed RENNtech to create elements that would help the GLK Rally Racer become more aerodynamically capable. For instance, the front splitter, rear diffuser and lower side skirts all help lead airflow beneath the vehicle to reduce drag, generate more downforce, and improve high speed stability at the rear.
Additionally, the GLK Rally Racer features rear wing elements that do not only assist aerodynamically, but also further highlight the already aggressive nature of the original GLK design. Moreover, the aerodynamic improvements have been seamlessly fused with the flared wheel arches, thereby creating a dynamic side line that highlights the athletic nature of the Rally Racer.
