Sergio Marchionne confirms Maserati SUV with Ferrari engine for 2012

If yesterday it was just a rumor, it appears that today it became official: Maserati will get its own SUV model in 2012, which will use the same platform as the Jeep Grand Cherokee. The car may come in both V8 and V12 version and as expected, the engines will be developed by Ferrari.
"It will be a rock and roll engine," said Sergio Marchionne. This means that the new car will be a direct competitor to cars such as the Porsche Cayenne, Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG and the Bmw X6/X6 M. For those who don’t know, the powerful Porsche Cayenne is powered by a 4.8-litre V8 biturbo engine delivering an impressive 500 bhp or 368 kW.
This engine is capable to deliver a fuel consumption of 11.5 ltr/100 km (equal to 24.6 mpg imp) in the New European Driving Cycle. The new Maserati SUV could use the 4.5-liter V8 engine found on the Ferrari 458 Italia, capable to deliver 578 hp at 9000 rpm and 540 Nm at 6000 rpm (over 80 per cent of which is available from 3250 rpm).
Regarding the fuel consumption, Ferrari says that the 458 Italia has a fuel consumption is 13.7 l/100 km (combined cycle), which is the best in the entire segment. The car has a dry weight of just 1380 kg with a power-to-weight ratio of 2.42 kg/hp. It can hit 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.4 seconds and has a top speed in excess of 325 km/h or 202 mph. [via CNN]
