Six Bmw models received the prestigious 2011 Good Design Award

2012 Bmw 6-Series Coupe/Convertible
When it comes to product design, BMW Group takes the highest recognition of all. The 2011 Good Design Award has been given to six BMW Group models. These are the BMW 6 Series Convertible, the BMW 6 Series Coupe, the BMW 1 Series M Coupe, the BMW ActiveE, as well as two motorcycle models -- BMW K 1600 GT/GTL and the BMW G650 GS. This annual award is the oldest and the most eminent international accolade when it comes to product design.
It started in 1950 and its founders include architects Eero Saarinen, Charles and Ray Eames, and Edgar Kaufmann Jr. is awarded by the Chicago Athenaeum and the European Centre for Architecture, Art Design and Urban Studies. This recognition has been given for more than 60 years now to extraordinarily innovative and visionary products. These are concepts and ideas that go beyond the limits of everyday product design. The award is being given out in order to make the public more aware of contemporary design along with the associated issues of sustainability. Saarinen and Eames had originally laid down the criteria, including functionality and aesthetics. But to keep with the times, there is an ecological aspect that looks at sustainable design. In 2011, its independent jury of design experts and architects examined the applications from around the world – the highest number that it has ever received. This jury is tasked to determine the final selection of over 500 product designs and graphics from 38 countries that could be considered worthy of the Good Design Award. What made the new BMW 6 Series Convertible deserve this award is that it combines a stretched bonnet, set-back passenger compartment, long wheelbase and flat waistline with a classic soft-top roof, which features a distinctive “fin” design. Its dynamic handling properties are demonstrated via its powerfully contoured surfaces and forward-surging lines.
