Skoda says that Vision D Concept shows off future design direction

Skoda said that its Vision D Concept won’t be the car that will be positioned between the Fabia and Octavia. This concept, which was shown in the recently held Geneva motor show, is a mid-size fastback with crisp lines and a new grille that Skoda’s chief designer, Josef Kaban, described as “proud, confident, but not arrogant.” The Vision D concept is meant to display Skoda’s future design direction. It also takes on several cues such as headlight/foglight locations that look like a four-leaf clover and rear lights that resemble a “bohemian crystal.”
These cues are expected to make it onto production cars. In an Autocar interview, Skoda’s board member for marketing and sales, Jurgen Stackmann, confirmed that the car’s overall proportions are not meant for production. He said that the company considers it a reference car, which he describes as a sports coupé.
The problem is that Skoda isn’t in the business of making sports coupés. The first car that will get the new design cues will be a choice between the Fabia and the Octavia. Stackmann said that the design DNA has “simple lines, with a clear start and a clear end.” Stackmann clarified that Skoda values being timeless rather than being fashionable. He said that a Skoda “should look as good after 10 years as when new.” Hopes are high for the new mid-size car to push the next Octavia further into the Mondeo segment. This vehicle is part of a push in which Skoda will release a new model every six months.
