Skoda Auto’s car sales increased by 12.8% to 568,990 vehicles during the first nine months of the year. Last month, the unit of Germany's Volkswagen AG said that for the month of September, it was able to sell 75,790 cars, its best monthly result on record. Meanwhile, Skoda's car sales in China, its fastest growing market, rose by 65% in the nine-month period to 134,470 units.

In terms of sales, Skoda is the second-largest company in the Czech Republic, with revenue equivalent to 5% of the country's gross domestic product. Skoda's performance is considered to be a broad gauge for the overall economy, which relies on exports of industrial goods, mainly cars, car parts, electronics and steel.

The Czech economy improved by 0.9% quarter on quarter in the three months to July and by 2.4% year on year, affected by foreign demand, after a 4.0% annual decrease in 2009. [via autonews - sub. required]
