Due to the fact that the Smart ForTwo is quite old, Mercedes-Benz is now working with Renault on a replacement for the popular two-seater. According to our sources, the all-new Smart ForTwo and the successor to the Renault Twingo will share the same platform. The new Smart ForTwo will arrive in 2014 and the Renault Twingo replacement will arrive in the same period. Regarding the current version of the ForTwo Electric, this vehicle will be upgraded in 2012 and according to Autonews it will receive an improved interior but also a new set of lithium ion batteries made by Deutsche Accumotive GmbH, a joint venture between Daimler and Evonik Industries.
Mercedes-Benz has big plans for its sub-brand and it is also planning a new four-seater based on the new ForTwo platform that could go on sale in 2015. The car is expected to have a rear-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive. Currently, sales of Smart brand in the United States have fallen by 76 percent.
According to statistics, only 5,927 units were delivered in 2010… a significant drop if we take a look back in 2008 when Smart delivered 24,622 vehicles. As a result, Daimler decided to relaunch the brand in the Unites States and announced that it will spend $35 million on a new marketing campaign! Still, the customers need to see a new lineup in order to see things moving…
