Lorinser, the tuning arm of the German carmaker Mercedes-Benz, has announced that it has brought back the 450 SEL 6.9. The super sedan, launched in 1975, was based on the W116 model series. Back then, it was the range-topper as it was said to exemplify luxury, fame and power.
Its 6.9-liter V8 engine was borrowed from the State 600 limousine. Maximum torque was rated at 550Nm while its peak power was 286hp (210kW). Lorinser installed wide square plastic aprons in place of the old slim chrome bumpers. In the rear, the same was done.
The rear held a more copious shape with Lorinser double exhaust pipes. The tuner claims that although the car has a hydro-pneumatic suspension system, the car still handles well. It assures the public that cornering remains very safe, that the road grip is still firm, and that the steering wheel is nimble. Lorinser said that its performance is comparable to the best even in today’s standards.
The super sedan goes from 0-100km/h in 7.4 seconds using its 205/55 VR 16 wheels and the 3-speed automatic gearbox, with a top speed of 225km/h. BBS provided the multi-spoke wheels since at the time, Lorinser had not been producing its own. To bring the sprint time down, the engineers are recommending wider tires.
