SPX, Aker Wade Power join forces to develop fast EV chargers

There will soon be a new contender in the global market for EV fast chargers with the agreement entered by SPX Service Solutions (a business unit of SPX Corp.) and Aker Wade Power Technologies to jointly develop these devices. In a statement, it was revealed that these charge stations will make use of an all-in-one connector from SAE that offers Level 1, 2, and DC Fast Charging for any EV, with a power level that allows for fast charging. The first product, a 30kW dealership-based unit, will be offered in North America and Europe and will comply with SAE and IEC standards.
The new charge station is intended to be a low-cost, wall-mounted indoor unit that’s originally targeted at dealerships. Its future products are designed to be used outdoor such as retail and public locations. Tanvir Arfi, president of SPX Service Solutions, said that DC fast charge infrastructure will lessen range anxiety, which encourages the more widespread use of EVs.
He explained that these chargers will enable dealerships to have an active role in EV sales and service. According to Aker Wade CEO Duncan Brown, the two companies hope that there would soon be a common standard for DC fast charging. They have both inked a letter of intent to set up a partnership formally in the second quarter of this year. Bosch Group has signed a deal to buy SPX Service Solutions, which is based in suburban Detroit. Aker Wade, which has its headquarters in Charlottesville, Va., is involved in the design and manufacture of advanced fast charging systems for electric vehicles and industrial forklifts.
