Spyker shifting its manufacturing base from Holland to U.K.
To cut costs, supercar maker Spyker is shifting its manufacturing base from Zeewolde in Holland to Coventry and aims to complete the relocation by the end of the year. Spyker has 135 employees in Holland but the company claims that only 45 jobs will be affected. While engineering, corporate staff functions, sales, after-sales, marketing and the company’s works GT race team will remain in Zeewolde, there may be redundancies among the staff. Spyker CEO Victor Muller explained that in these times, a “small” carmaker such as Spyker has to look for ways to cut costs and improve its efficiency.
By relocating vehicle assembly to CPP (Manufacturing) Ltd., its main supplier based in the Midlands, the company is securing the future of its business. Since about half of Spyker’s vehicle parts and components are sourced in the UK, and almost all key suppliers are located there, moving closer to them will result in “substantial savings and tangible efficiency improvements.”
Muller says that the company realizes that the move will affect jobs in the Netherlands but that it is necessary under the current economic conditions and is in the best interest of the company and all of its stakeholders.
