AvtoVAZ has appointed Steve Mattin to be the design boss of its Russian brand Lada effective October 1, 2011. Mattin is a former Volvo Cars design chief. At Volvo, which he joined in 2005 from Mercedes-Benz, Mattin was responsible for the XC60 designs and the S60 concepts. He left the Swedish automaker in 2009 to work as an independent design consultant. As head of design at Lada, Mattin will help renew the company's product lineup in the next six years.

The brand intends to launch 20 new models by 2017, with the aid from its alliance partner Renault. The plans include a new range of Lada compact models to be introduced in 2016.

The vehicles will possibly be using the platform and some components of the Renault Megane. In addition, Lada will replace in 2015 the Lada 4x4, formerly known as the Niva. Moreover, a compact crossover and a small crossover are planned to be introduced in 2017 and 2016, respectively.
