Subaru is planning a new coupe based on the Hybrid Tourer Concept

anning to build a new coupe that will be based on the gullwing-doored Hybrid Tourer Concept, which debuts at the Tokyo Motor Show next week. The new luxury performance sports car will sit at the top of the company‚ range. This model is considered to be the spiritual successor to the highly-applauded SVX, which appeared in 1991 and was a fierce competitor of cars such as the BMW M3. It is believed that it will use the same platform as the Hybrid Tourer. Power will come from a 2.5-litre turbocharged boxer engine although there‚ speculation that an electric hybrid drivetrain, such as what‚ used on the concept car, is possible. Continued after the jump! According to a Subaru insider, the car would target brawny performance motors such as the Vauxhall VXR8.. This implies that the car would be priced at around ¬£40,000. The SVX replacement will be added to the carmaker‚ new lineup, which already has the upcoming ¬£20,000 coup√©, a sister car to the FT-86 that Subaru has jointly developed with Toyota . Slated to be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 2010, the coupe will not have a new design and will instead use the same body as the FT-86 Concept. To differentiate it, Subaru made sure that it gets unique styling cues. The model will also feature the same Legacy-derived rear-wheel-drive chassis with power from a 200bhp 2.0-litre boxer engine, mated to a new six-speed manual gearbox.
