Because of the risks posed by a potential faulty tension adjuster pulley for the power steering and air conditioning drive belt, the American division of Suzuki is recalling 46,549 units of the 2006 model year Grand Vitara and 2005-2006 model year XL-7 SUVs. The tension adjuster pulley possesses an outer portion that is created from plastic. Pieces of the pulley could break off if the plastic deteriorates due to repeated heat stress. As a result, pieces of the pulley could get caught between the pulley and the drive belt. It's possible that the drive belt will come off, making the car lose its steering power assist. The driver would then have to exert more effort to steer, raising the risk of crash. The recall will start on June 25. Suzuki dealerships will replace the power steering pump drive tension adjuster pulley free of charge. Those who own Grand Vitara and XL-7 models may call Suzuki at 1-800-934-0934 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
