Diesel-powered AMG models considered by Mercedes-Benz

2010 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMGSo many carmakers have been caught up with the competition on horsepower but with the growing consumer demands for environmental responsibility, this may prove to be a problem very soon. Many would point to the Mercedes-Benz‘ AMG division for intensifying the race but the tuners at the Benz performance division sense that there would have to be changes.

Firstly, AMG developed the electric version of the SLS. It has been confirmed that an electric SLS, which produces 526 horsepower and 649 lb-ft of torque on tap, would be produced but up to now, no launch date has been revealed. Whether this version will be a fixture in other models remains unknown but when it does, it shouldn’t come as a surprise. There is speculation though that the most likely change in future AMG products would be the use of diesel engines. A year ago, AMG boss Volker Mornhinweg confirmed this to be a possible course of action. Sources say that AMG is still mulling over the idea and has yet to make a decision. Official: AMG launching high-performance diesel by 2011

2008 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMGVolker Mornhinweg, the boss of Mercedes‘ tuning division, has announced that AMG plans to open a diesel version “within three years,”. Mornhinweg described the prospective high-performance diesel as an upgrade version of the renowned AMG Hammer, a gas-engined W124 E-class. “This car will be the Super Hammer,” Mornhinweg said.

Unlike the CL or S-class, the AMG diesel will not be a large coupe or saloon since the AMG boss has previously announced that he favored the concept of a more dimunitive, lighter and more efficient vehicle. This will probably mean a C-class diesel, like the C320, is in line for the AMG treatment. More details after the jump!
