Caterham to reveal its plans to go electric within six months

2010 Caterham Super SevenCaterham is looking into the possibility of building electric vehicles and is set to make a decision within six months, company boss Ansar Ali revealed during an interview with Autocar.

At last year’s Tokyo Motor Show, Ali said that talks were ongoing with several potential partners who are interested to work with the company. He said that they aim to do it properly with the right partners, and “not just stick batteries in the back of a Seven.” Ali said that it’s currently still at a very early stage but at this point, one thing’s for sure – that it won’t be a volume product. Caterham planning to develop electric cars

Caterham CS350Before 2009 ends, Caterham promises to unveil a prototype of its projects to develop hybrid and electric powertrains for its cars, and will unveil a prototype before the end of this year. At the Tokyo Motor Show, Caterham stands out since it is one of only three non-Japanese carmakers participating in the exhibit.

Caterham boss Ansar Ali said that with regards to its ongoing EV program, it would begin with a motorsport application, which it sees as a “tested for technology.” Caterham’s hybrid drivetrain comes from another manufacturer, which can be fitted to its existing engines. In cooperation with Project Splitwheel, the producer of the famous Seven is providing car buffs, regardless of any engineering skill, design experience or mechanical ability, a chance to help design an all-new sports car.

From here, members from all over the planet are able to submit their own ideas and concepts for every single feature of the new Caterham and brainstorm them with other users, before finally voting on what makes it to the ultimate vehicle. Next-generation of Caterham Superlight R300 to return in 2009

Caterham Superlight R300The Caterham Superlight R300 which was recently released completes the famous Caterham “Superlgiht” family. Patterned after the R400 and R500, the current Seven has an acceleration rate of 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds thanks to a new 2.0-liter Ford Duratec engine, tuned by Caterham Powertrain (CPT) to provide a responsive 175 hp.

Started in 2002 and outfitted with a Rover engine, the former R300 was the manufacturer’s best-selling Seven with the aid of an obsessive nature triggered by its wonderful mixture of performance and driving ease. The fresh Ford-powered version constructs from this foundation with added engine performance and chassis improvement, all of these but at the same time preserving the R300’s winning character.
