The new Trabant NT Concept was launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show to attract investors willing to fund the car’s launch in 2012. German manufacturer Herpa Miniaturmodelle GmbH revealed the electric prototype that retains the square, boxy look of the original car.

The updated “Trabi” will be a stylish car with a history, according to Herpa’s Daniel Stiegler. For recharging its battery, the new Trabant will have a rooftop solar panel. The new Trabant also has a range of about 156 miles and a kerb weight of less than 1,000kg. The electric powertrain is being built by Berlin-based IAV Automotive Engineering. Further technical details have yet to be released. For a little bit of history about Herpa, it is located in Zwickau, the same German county where the original Trabant factory was based. Herpa, which makes model cars and airplanes, purchased the Trabant copyright in 2007. About three million original Trabants were built between 1957 and 1991. Photo gallery after the jump!

For those who don’t remember, we announced the New Trabant back in August and as we said, the new electric concept made its debut today at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show. The new car revives the legendary name and it is build by a small design center but promises to hit the dealerships in 2012.

The concept features a 64 hp electric motor capable to deliver a top speed of 130 km/h and a range of about 250 km. A full recharge of the car takes about 8 hours but a fast recharge will also be available and will take about half an hour. Even as a lack of financing has plagued the production of the new electric Trabant, we’re still very excited that it’s coming to the Frankfurt Auto Show next month. Some of the readers may be too young to remember the Trabant, or Trabi, as it was called. It was the signature vehicle of East Germany before the Berlin wall was knocked down.

The new version is named the Trabant nT and carries a lithium-ion battery that gives it a range of about 250 kilometers (156 miles). The car will also spot photoelectric cells to power the A/C system. A complete list of specs has yet to be released but we do know that the van versions would sport exceptional payload. IndiKar is supporting the project. Electrics are supplied by IAV GmbH and design is by Poschwatta Nils, who worked at VW before pursuing the new Trabi project.

Few weeks ago we told you about the debut of the new Trabant at the Frankfurt Motor Show! We know that some people were very happy and we have some more great news today: the new Trabi will also have a pure electric version, capable to offer a range of 250 km. We also find out that the new Trabant is set to hit the showrooms by 2012! The car will carry a gasoline engine too, but the details stop here!
