Official: Ferrari confirms the 599 GTO

Friday, February 12th, 2010

Ferrari 599 GTB FioranoAfter intense speculation, Ferrari has finally given confirmation that the 599 GTO will be released. Basically, the 599 GTO is a road variant of the racecar Ferrari 599 XX.

Interestingly, this is the first time that Ferrari has used the GTO nameplate since the 288 GTO, which was built from 1984-1986. Ferrari CEO Amedeo Felisa, who confirmed this news through Evo Magazine, said that the classification of the 599 GTB Fiorano has been changed from “GT” to its “Sports Car” designation, allowing for the development of this extreme GTO version. The car’s 6.0-liter V12 engine can generate about 700hp due to an increased rev limit of 9,000 rpm, which is 88 hp over the standard 599. It will also have quicker gearchanges than the standard 599 GTB Fiorano with just 60 milliseconds (a drop from 100 milliseconds), a 0.5-second-faster 0-60 mph time of just 3.2 seconds and, a 217 mph top speed. According to Evo, the UK will receive 50 units after the official debut at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show this March. The car is priced from $460,000. Deliveries are expected to start this May.

Earlier this week, Ferrari boss Amedeo Felisa confirmed the launch of the GTO, a more focused version of the 599 than the current GTB and HGTE models. The car will have a horsepower that exceeds 650bhp, with a similar rise in torque and performance. The car’s weight is reduced to less than 1650kg. The car will also possibly feature the higher performing ferrous iron brake pad technology pioneered on the XX model in addition to the more aggressive gear shift software and elements of the aerodynamic upgrades seen on the 599XX. The GTO is expected to be announced at the upcoming Geneva show. Delivery will likely start in the summer, possibly in June. The car will be priced from £250-300k, depending on options.
