Official: 2010 Vodafone McLaren Mercedes F1 car coming on January 29th

Friday, January 15th, 2010

Mercedes-Benz F1 MonopostOn January 29, we will witness the unveiling of Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Formula One Team’s 2010 challenger. That’s only two days prior to the start of the official testing season in Valencia.

While rivals have changed the official designation of their 2010 car, McLaren didn’t. In fact, it is set to unveil the MP4-25 before the media in the UK, with the location to be announced within the next few days. Incidentally, McLaren made its announcement only a day after Ferrari confirmed that it will also showcase its 2010 challenger before the Valencia testing next month. Ferrari’s 281 model will be displayed on January 28, 3 days after Petronas Mercedes GP shows its unit at the Mercedes-Benz museum in Unterturkheim. Red Bull Racing plans to skip the first three days of testing at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit so that its engineers have more time to work on the RB6 for the next season. The Jan. 29 car launch show is also significant to McLaren Mercedes because it will mark the first time that Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button will meet as McLaren drivers.

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

McLaren MP412CMcLaren is finding it increasingly difficult to set up a US dealer network for its new MP4-12C supercar. It’s hard enough to get the attention of people who could afford six-figure supercars. There is also that challenge of convincing dealers to commit to a one-model lineup. McLaren initially planned to bring the car to the L.A. Auto Show in December for a US debut but that plan has now been cancelled. It’s believed that the earliest that the MP4 would be arriving in the US is the middle of 2010. Photo gallery after the jump!

Preview: McLaren MP4-12C Spider

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

McLaren MP4 12C SpiderMcLaren is planning to produce a Spider version of its MP4-12C supercar. Here are illustrations of the amazing drop-top. This model will prove to be a formidable rival to the Ferrari 458 Italia Spider, Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder and upcoming Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Cabriolet.

McLaren, a Surrey-based company, will boast a retractable hard-top, believed to be the work of convertible expert Webasto. An area of the Woking factory has been devoted to ‘RHT [retractable hard-top] Sub Assembly.’ It is likely that the tiny hood is made from lightweight aluminum or even carbon fiber. This allows for the hardop to be folded away behind the occupants’ heads ahead of the engine. The Spider is believed to weigh about the same as the car with a fixed hardtop. Powering it is the same 600bhp 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8. In 3.5 seconds, the car will be able to reach 0-60mph and have a top speed of 200mph. Prices start from £175,000.

McLaren MP4 12c breaks cover

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

McLaren MP4 12CNot only has McLaren launched its own separate automotive division, it has also released a new supercar named the MP4-12C. The British race engineering firm developed the car entirely in-house and has incorporated its latest advances in automotive technology as seen from the Formula 1 circuit.

McLaren’s engineers used an extremely light and rigid carbon fiber tub but they didn’t use the heavier multi-piece tubs used by its competitors and predecessors. Instead, they used a single piece, weighing only 176 pounds. Compared to rivals, the MP4-12C is lighter in weight but is more expensive than either the new Ferrari 458 Italia or the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4. The MP4-12C is expected to have a £160,000 ($265k) price tag, due partly to its body panels, which are all carbon fiber and composites. Continued after the jump!
