Nissan revises its annual outlook to a profit from a loss

2010 Nissan MaximaNissan Motor Co. revised its annual outlook — from a loss to a profit — as the increase in sales in China resulted to a rise in quarterly earnings that exceeded the market’s expectations. Japan’s third-largest automaker was expected to lift its forecasts after it brought up its sales target in the fast-growing Chinese market by nearly a fifth last September.

The demand for models such as the Tiida and the Sylphy was boosted by Beijing’s tax incentives for smaller cars. For the July-September quarter, Nissan reported an operating profit of 83.28 billion yen ($922 million), a 25.4% decrease from a profit of 111.7 billion yen a year earlier. This figure beats an average estimate of 31.8 billion yen from four analysts. Net profit was down 65% to 25.53 billion yen. Other Japanese carmakers have also lifted their annual forecasts as the various governments’ stimulus measures have provided at least a temporary boost to demand. Nissan now expects to sell 3.3 million vehicles globally in the year to March, raising its forecast by 7%.
