Nissan North America has leased its first fuel cell vehicle

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

Nissan X-Trail FCVNissan North America’s first fuel cell vehicle (FCV) – a modified Nissan X-trail — has been leased to the Sacramento Coca-Cola Bottling Company. Nissan’s first commercially available FCV is fitted with all the proper components to allow it to run on hydrogen and it has a fuel cell stack and lithium-ion batteries that give it a 300-mile range.

Eric Noziere, Nissan’s vice president of corporate planning, said that Sacramento has already begun a hydrogen infrastructure. The X-trail FCV, which boasts a top speed of 95 mph, is claimed to have a performance close to that of a traditional gasoline-powered SUV. The lease will initially be a one-year term with the option to extend another two years. The X-trail, which will be used to market Coke Zero in the Sacramento area, promotes the drink as having zero calories, zero carbohydrates, and zero emissions. Earlier this year, Nissan disclosed that it was testing a next-generation fuel cell stack that is smaller by 25% and costs much less to build. The X-trail FCS is only available in Japan, Mexico, and Europe.
