Sunday, October 18th, 2009

2010 Skoda SuperbThe upcoming fleets of Skoda vehicles will be more daring and will have more flair than ever, according to Karl Neuhold, one of the brand’s chief designers and the man behind the new Superb estate. The image of Skoda has always been about good value but now, it wants to focus on styling.

Neuhold said that the company is looking for something that’s avant-garde and that will make the driver feel well-dressed. Nevertheless, the cars will not lose the qualities that have made Skodas famous such as spaciousness. In particular, Neuhold said that models like the next Octavia will have new design that shows styling that can’t be considered “a simple evolution” of the current car and will instead be “big step forwards.” One of the ideas being tossed around is a Skoda sports car.

Skoda planning an electric car based on Vw E-Up Concept

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

Vw E-Up ConceptSkoda has several projects it is considering in order for Volkswagen to be the number one manufacturer by 2018. One of the projects that has gotten many people excited is an electric model that might be released in a few years, according to Autocar.

If Skoda does get the go signal to start working on this EV, it is likely to be based on the E-Up Concept model that was displayed by Volkswagen at the Frankfurt Auto Show. The concept is equipped with an electric unit and a 18 kWh lithium-ion battery. The E-Up measures 3.19 meters (length) x 1.64 meters (width) x 1.47 meters (height) and has a wheelbase of 2.19 meters. The E-Up’s 3+1 seater’s powertrain develops 60 kW/80 hp (continuous power of 40 kW) and 210 Nm of torque. This means the electric concept can go from 0 to 100 km/h in 11.3 seconds or reach 50 km/h in 3.5 seconds. Klaus Bischoff, Chief Designer of Volkswagen Brand, had said that the E-Up! has a “reduced, very clear and yet highly emotional design.” That means that it really isn’t much different from its stylistic ‘siblings’ of the New Small Family, the Roadster BlueSport and the new Polo.

Skoda to halt production after German scrapping scheme ends

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

2010 Skoda Fabia ScoutDue to the steep drop in demand following the end of Germany ’s scrappage scheme, Skoda is considering stopping production for two days in October. Jaroslav Cerny, Skoda spokesman, said that while it is not definite yet, Skoda is thinking of it as part of an annual stock survey that regularly takes place in the factory, usually at the end of October.

He added that it would be likely that Skoda would link the stoppage with the Oct. 28 public holiday. The days off would be Oct. 29-30, says Autonews. Most affected by the end of the scrappage scheme was the demand for the Fabia, its most popular model. The government incentives boosted Germany ’s new car sales by 26.6% to 2.4 million units in the first eight months compared to the previous year’s sales.
