A meeting last Thursday participated by Canadian automotive group Magna International Inc., General Motors Co. and workers at German carmaker Opel adjourned with no result, says Autonews. Curiously, Opel labor leader Klaus Franz says that the sides are taking some "time for reflection." Nothing specific was disclosed by all the parties. While Franz says that there is still a substantial point to decide, he emphasized that negotiations are "in the home stretch."

A troubling point was raised by Rainer Einenkel, head of the works council at Opel's factory in Bochum, western Germany. He said that it remains unclear which plants will produce which cars in the future and whether it will be possible to avoid plant closures. He adds that the talks are expected to proceed this week but there's no saying when a conclusion will be reached. Meanwhile, sources have said that they expect that the sale contracts will be signed by the middle of next week. A preliminary agreement is said to be struck with workers this week. A formal closing is expected by the end of November, according to GM and Magna officials.
