There was a sneak preview of the Tata Nano Europa in London this week that was attended by Autocar’s Steve Cropley. Earlier this year, the European version of the Tata Nano was shown at the Geneva Motor Show and since then, consumers had been waiting eagerly for its arrival expected in 2011.

In India, the world’s cheapest car was launched earlier this year and carries a price tag of less than £2000. However, they had to take into account the increased cost of making it ‘Europeanized’ (more creature comforts, improved crash test safety). It is likely that the car will cost from £4000 - £5000 in the UK. Continued after the jump!

Powering it is a 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine, which will produce around 60bhp. The Indian version is four-speed while the Europa will get a five-speed manual ‘box to allow for longer gearing, improved fuel economy and reduced CO2 emissions.

Also featured is an all-steel body, with an overall length of 3300mm. This makes it about eight inches longer than the original Mini, but still far shorter than any contemporary European supermini. The show car rides on 14-inch alloys.

The Tata Nano is equipped with all-independent rear suspension features. Europa models will get ABS, traction control, electric power steering and twin airbags. Boot access is still unknown. Indian Nanos are strictly four-door, but a full-size hatchback is possible for the European version.
