Tata Nano goes on sale for $2,000

Tata NanoThe Tata Nano will come with the standard and deluxe variants and both will offer wide ranging body color finish and elements so that the car can be modified to the owner’s own liking.

The drivertain of the Nano is an all-aluminum 623cc powerplant that come with only two cylinders generating 33hp (25kW) with a maximum speed of 60mph (96km/h). Thin-pressed metal make up its bodywork, and it is equipped with modern safety elements like crumple zones, seat belts and intrusion-resistant door. There is a strong likelihood that the Nano will reach markets outside of India with the showcasing of a special European version of the car with the moniker Nano Europa at the Geneva Motor Show recently. With the Nano Europa the safety features are uprated with ABS and ESP, and also with a more potent powerhouse. It is not yet sure if this version will get to US shores, but if it can reach Europe then it would most probably get there, too. Although the introduction of the model came months later than Tata intended, the changes in the global economy and the currency markets have even lowered the price of the $2,500 to $2,000, thus Tata has more than kept its promise to offer a car for 1 lakh. The first deliveries won’t arrive until the middle of next week though while Tata’s production abilities still remains hindered after the protests at the West Bengal halted the production of the Nano’s main factory. A new plant is being constructed at Gujarat but it won’t be up for production until the end of 2009. Photo gallery after the jump!
