A pickup truck that costs lower than $5,000? That‚ what‚ Tata Motors is planning to create in order to expand its lineup. This vehicle codenamed ‚ÄúPenguin‚Äù is powered by a 350cc single-cylinder diesel engine.
The Penguin has a interesting engine configuration. Similar to front wheel-drive vehicles, the engine is mounted on the drive wheels but in the rear. It is believed that the design lowers costs and that the small engine reduces drivetrain power loss. Penguin‚ Nano influences are made obvious by Penguin‚ sharing a single wiper arm and three-lug wheels. The Penguin is designed very simply -- up front is a small cab large enough for two passengers. At the back, there‚ only a flat bed with short walls on each side. The Penguin is a genuine truck; it can haul a load of mulch similar to others in its league. There‚ speculation that came out from those at Indian Autos Blog who claim the Penguin to be a half ton pickup, with its small size and displacement. It is believed that the Penguin costs less than $5,000. Unfortunately, it‚ unlikely that the Penguin will ever be sold in the US.
