Sources revealed that Team Lotus is buying Caterham, a sports car company based in Kent. AirAsia entrepreneur Tony Fernandes, which owns Team Lotus, has pledged to bring in new investments that will give birth to several product projects. Caterham is currently operated by former Lotus executive Ansar Ali and its owner is private equity firm Corven Ventures.
The announcement of the deal is set to take place next Wednesday, during a Team Lotus event at Duxford airfield. This event is an activity related to F1 racing but in the invitation, it says that there will be “an incredibly exciting announcement” about the team’s future.
Fernandes is involved in a pending court case with Lotus Cars over using the name in Formula One. The purchase of Caterham would give Fernandes an alternative brand that he can market. But then sources have told Autocar that there is no decision yet on whether the Caterham brand will be plastered on F1 cars in the near future.
