Tesla delivers its 250th Roadster

The 250th Roadster electric sports car was delivered by Tesla Motors to Dr. Rob Wilder of Encinitas, California. From the company's newsletter made available last Wednesday, Tesla has increased it car production to 20 units weekly from 15 units just more than a month ago. Tesla aims to hit 30 units per week by summer this year, at that level it will become profitable says the company. The 250th owner of the Roadster, Dr. Wilder, who is the CEO of WilderShares LLC and manager of the WilderHill Clean Energy Index, made a stand previously stating that he will not spend more than $13,000 on a car and would rather choose used cars instead. The Roadster, which cost Dr. Wilder $109,000 is more expensive than all his cars put together. Although it is not a bargain, Wilder says that it's a great value.
The car comes with very high performance for its price point, for instance it can sprint from standstill to 60mph in just 3.9 seconds. Wilder intends to charge the electric vehicle through solar panels that powers his own home. Tesla has a backlog of about 1000 orders which it aims to meet by October this year. But this backlog will increase with its intention of opening a new store in Chicago and also retail locations in London, Manhattan, Miami, Munich, Seattle, and Washington. Tesla also announced earlier this month that it will begin selling to Canada by the fourth quarter of 2009. The Model S sedan prototype, which will reach production in 2011, will be unveiled by Tesla this week as earlier reported. The production Model S will come with a $57,400 base price tag but with a tax credit of $7,500 making the final price of the car at $49,900.
