Over 3,000 reservations have been recorded for the Tesla Model S electric sedan. Deliveries will start in 2012 for this vehicle, which will be equipped with NVIDIA Tegra processors that will power the in-vehicle infotainment, navigation and instrument-cluster systems. Tesla chose the Tegra processor since it offers a high level of energy efficiency, a vital feature for electric cars. One processor will be used to power the infotainment and navigation systems, and another for the instrument cluster.
A 17-inch touchscreen - the largest display ever in a car - will be used for the Tesla Model S infotainment. It features in-car 3G connectivity, which will give its occupants access to Pandora Radio, Google Maps, or enable them to check their level of charge remotely from their iPhone or laptop.
JB Straubel, chief technology officer at Tesla Motors, said that Model S is designed for performance-oriented efficiency and that NVIDIA enables the company to use the highest graphics with the lowest energy use.
