Tesla says Model S has a price tag of up to $92,400

California-based Tesla Motors Inc. has released the prices and features of its Model S electric sedan, which will go on sale in 2012. A base version of the car will cost $57,400, packed with a 40-kwh battery pack, which could provide a range of up to 160 miles per charge on a 55-mph drive.

A mid-range version will cost $67,400. This is powered by a 60-kwh battery pack, and has an estimated range of 230 miles on a 55-mph drive. Meanwhile, a high-range version is priced at $87,400, equipped with an 85-kwh battery pack and could cover 300 miles on a 55-mph drive. A top-of-the-line version could hit around $92,400. All versions qualify for a $7,500 tax credit.

Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO said the company has already sold out its 2012 production, with orders of more than 7,000 units. Tesla, owned by Musk, Daimler, Toyota and Panasonic, expects to post a profit in 2013.
