Tesla withdrawing from the Progressive Automotive X-Prize competition

Saying that it needs to focus on getting the Model S sedan ready for production by 2011, Tesla has decided to pull itself out from the Progressive Automotive X-Prize Competition. The winner of this green competition would be the first company that can develop a production-ready vehicle that gets more than 100 mpg (or its electrical equivalent). The prize is $10 million. Cars joining the contest can be powered by anything but some of the more common ones include batteries, solar cells, biodiesel, and compressed natural gas.
Despite Tesla's decision to withdraw, it will still appear in the event. Tesla had originally planned to enter a production-ready Model S, but now that it is no longer competing with its new sedan, it may bring a Roadster instead. Ricardo Reyes, Tesla Motors's vice president of communications, told Stuff that it was agreed that a car will be put in the demonstration division instead, so it can still participate. Reyes added that people should look at the demonstration division as well, since it's more geared towards actual car manufacturers and it's a better fit for us.
