With a new video clip released recently on the Net showing Top Gear's original test driver, the Black Stig, talks of BBC's intention of bringing him back after his identity was unveiled last month ensued. The original masked driver was the idea of Jeremy Clarkson when Top Gear was reopened in 2002. When the Stig was identified as Perry McCarthy he was then a retired British race driver. The name of the Stig was based on the nickname provided to the boys at Clarkson's school. The press statement that followed the video said that up until recently the Stig was believed to have died in 2003 when he drove off the end of an aircraft carrier at 109 mph in a revised Jaguar XJS. However, the recent clip shows that the Stig, in fact, survived and is very much alive. How he managed to survive, no one knows for certain. There are many and varied, even ridiculous, explanations have been submitted to explain away what really happened. The identity of the driver has been a best kept Secret at BBC except for a few staff and the hosts of the show Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond, but was an open secret within the motorsport world. The identity of the Stig was kept to preserve the spirit of the program. There are speculations that, since the identity of the White Stig, Ben Collins, a Bristol-based former American speedway driver and stuntman, has been compromised that the Black Stig necessitates a return. That still remains to be seen. Video after the jump!
