Toyota instructing dealers to tie down floor mats

In relation to Toyota's largest US recall in history, instructions have been sent to the dealers in order for them to be able to continue selling and delivering both new and used vehicles. Specifically, Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc. is telling dealers to attach floor mats to seat frames on the driver's side of select vehicles with self-locking wire ties to prevent the mats from snagging on gas pedals and causing unintended acceleration. Toyota spokesman Brian Lyons said that the company has been working with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to come up with a semi-permanent floor mat installation process. Toyota is recalling 3.8 million Toyota and Lexus models to secure the mats. The recall stemmed from an accident in August that killed four people in a Lexus. It's believed that a floor mat catching on the accelerator caused the crash, says Autonews. Lyons said that Toyota Motor Sales started sending out instructions about the fix to its regional sales offices on Oct. 1. By now, Lyons says that he expects all dealers have already received the information and have started making the modifications.
