If the current Avalon offers only the 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine, the 2013 Toyota Avalon will also offer a hybrid version when it will go on sale this fall. The all-new 2013 Toyota Avalon Hybrid was revealed today, together with a 2.5-liter, Atkinson-cycle, four-cylinder engine and a 244.8-volt nickel-metal hydride battery pack as well as a pair of electric motor/generators within the transaxle. According to the official press release, the Avalon Hybrid delivers a total system output of 200 horsepower and is rated by EPA at 40 mpg in the city, and a 39 mpg on the highway for a combined 40 mpg. Just like any other hybrid model from Toyota, the Avalon Hybrid offers three unique modes of operation: EV, ECO and SPORT. The EV mode transforms the car into an electric vehicle, which can be drive for up to one mile at speeds up to 25 mph. The ECO mode engages the gasoline motor but reduces throttle response and HVAC output in order to improve efficiency. The Sport mode is the least fuel-efficient as the engine gives its bed using more fuel. The battery is found in the vehicle trunk behind the rear seats, which means the Avalon Hybrid is still providing ample trunk space.
