Toyota planning to ramp up Tundra production

Amid the economic crisis that hit the auto industry hard, Toyota Motor Corp. is preparing to resume a second shift at its San Antonio, Tex. plant in February, to cope with the demand for Tundra full-size pickup trucks. These trucks are currently being produced at a California plant that will close in March. The Texas plant was idle from August to November 2008 due to the drop in sales of trucks and SUVs. In November, it resumed production but only had one shift. The plant currently has 2,000 employees and will be adding 850 full-time and temporary workers for the second shift. The plant in California, known as NUMMI (the New United Motor Manufacturing Inc.), was a joint venture with General Motors Co. and had been building Tacoma trucks and Corolla sedans. The Texas plant will also begin to build Tacoma trucks in July 2010.
