Toyota preparing to boost production at its San Antonio pickup factory

2010 Toyota Tacoma

Toyota Motor Corp. is adding a second shift at its San Antonio pickup factory in February as it takes over production of the mid-sized Tacoma pickup, according to Mike Goss, Toyota manufacturing spokesman. Toyota will be hiring 850 workers for the second shift. In 2008, the plant removed its second shift amid inadequate sales of the Tundra after a year of production. Toyota is pushing for the increase in workforce in San Antonio to take over assembly of the mid-sized Tacoma pickup in July. Toyota is closing the New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. in Fremont, Calif., and will be transferring the production of the Tacoma to Texas. The San Antonio plant will then produce the Tacoma and the Tundra, the combined volume of which totals to about 150,000 pickups, which is still short of its planned capacity. The plant, which had opened in late 2006, had a plan to produce 200,000 Tundras each year. However, they had to cut production due to the economic crisis as well as the collapse of the full-sized pickup market. [via autonews - sub. required]
