The Toyota Prius is one of Japan's best selling models of 2009, with sales of 208,876 hybrids, according to the Japan Automobile Dealers Association. Toyota spokesman Paul Nolasco told DetNews that the numbers speak for themselves. He explained that the Prius is the ideal package people in Japan are looking for in terms of environmental and driving performance. Coming in second place in the hybrid competition in Japan is Honda's Insight, with only 93,283 units sold in 2009. Starting May, the Insight got beaten every single month of 2009 ever since the revised Prius was released. Continued after the jump! Toyota said that the Prius has become the best-selling gas-electric hybrid in the world, with 1.6 million units sold. Also, for the first time ever, Toyota sold more vehicles in Asia than in Japan. According to a report from Japan Today, Toyota had sold around 1,354,000 vehicles in Asia until the end of November, while Japan sold 1,256,000 units. Out of the total units sold in Asia, except Japan, nearly half were in China (with 622,000 units sold). Analysts say that the total number at the end of the year could reach around 700,000 units.
