Toyota RAV4 shows serious transmission problem

About 120 owners of Toyota's 2001-2003 RAV4 have filed complaints to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the numbers are sure to increase. Owners are upset that Toyota is reluctant to acknowledge a defect with the electronically controlled transmission. The reports are saying that the engine control module (ECM) may fail and send mixed signals to the transmission. Once the owner notices the defect due to rough or missed shifts, the ECM needs to immediately be serviced to avoid major transmission damage. Owners were not notified even after Toyota has internally confirmed the issue (a TSB was issued to dealers in March of 2006). The owners are all the more upset due to costly repair bills to replace transmissions when all the cars needed was a simple electronic module. A NHTSA spokesman said that it is watching the issue very closely. Meanwhile, Toyota is studying the issue to determine whether to extend its warranty on the parts in question. [via autoblog]
