Toyota to use the Prius name on more hybrid models

Dealers were told during a meeting earlier this week that Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. will use the Prius name on more hybrid models in its US lineup. The name Prius is said to be attached to a family of models using similar hybrid powertrains, according to veteran Toyota dealer Earl Stewart. He said that calling it 'Synergy Drive' never resonated with consumers. Stewart says further that Prius is a magic name and that if someone says he or she drives a Prius, everyone will know what it means. Toyota Motor Sales COO Jim Lentz has been pushing for a multi-platform Prius lineup for a year. Steward says that this is the first time it has been discussed with TMS President Yoshi Inaba and Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda. He confirmed that Toyota will have a range of Prius hybrid models but Prius won't be a separate sub-brand like Scion.
