Toyota will soon offer to fix the accelerator pedals of up to 4 million vehicles
Toyota Motor Corp. is expected to soon issue a notice to fix the accelerator pedals of up to 4 million vehicles in the US under a deal with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Kyodo News reports. Toyota and the NTHSA are believed to have come to an agreement over the largest safety recall ever with Toyota offering to voluntarily repair the accelerator pedals, according to sources who spoke with Kyodo News. Toyota is said to be finalizing the last few steps for the action. These reports have yet to be confirmed however, with Toyota spokesman Hideaki Honma even denying that an agreement had been reached with the NTHSA.
Last September, Toyota announced the recall for about 3.8 million vehicles in the US due to the potential risk that a loose floormat could press down the accelerator, a problem that was alleged to have caused crashes that killed five people.
Toyota has said that the cost of any related repair work have no effect on its business. In fact, Toyota has set aside nearly 500 billion yen ($5.6 billion) in provisions for recalls.
The vehicles subject to the recall include the Camry and Avalon sedans, the Prius hybrid, the Tacoma and Tundra pickup trucks and the Lexus IS250, the IS350 and the ES350.
