Toyota Yaris-based hybrid coming by 2011

2012 Toyota Yaris Hybrid

Toyota is adding to its global lineup with a hybrid car that's smaller and cheaper than the current cheapest Hybrid, the Honda Insight. This is consistent with Toyota's campaign to launch hybrid variants of almost every vehicle it sells over the next decade. The new model, which would be based on the Yaris subcompact, could be priced as low as $15,650 in Japan. Using Japan's 10-15 urban test cycle, the Yaris hybrid had rated at 94mpg while the Prius recorded 89 mpg. However, these figures are regarded to be inapplicable to real world driving conditions. If Toyota's new model is anything like the Yaris, it will end up with EPA ratings in the low 50s and real world performance in the high 40s for most drivers. Many analysts are saying that Toyota's new hybrid will give Honda something to worry about.
