Two men were arrested and charged with grand theft auto for stealing a vintage Mercedes-Benz owned by actor John Travolta, the police said last Wednesday. Last September, Travolta parked his convertible 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280-SL on a street in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, while visiting a nearby Jaguar dealership. Santa Monica police Sergeant Richard Lewis said that last December, Michael Green, 58, and D.L. Rayford, 52, were taken into custody by members of a law enforcement task force investigating a car-theft ring. Lewis said that the investigators arrived at a "chop shop," where stolen vehicles were found, including parts of Travolta’s car. He said that they recovered many pieces but not the entire car. He explained that the arrests weren’t revealed earlier because they didn’t want to compromise a bigger investigation into the car theft ring. [source: Reuters]
