Union representatives to discuss Opel restructuring plan this Wednesday

2010 Opel AgilaThis Wednesday’s meeting between General Motors Co. Interim regional chief Nick Reilly and union representatives will decide the fate of 50,000 workers in Europe. Lothar Sorger, Opel’s deputy labor leader in Kaiserslautern, Germany, said that the parties will discuss restructuring plans. Sorger claims that getting complete financing until 2014 is one of their priorities.

The union wants to avoid the situation wherein investments in models and new development work would be canceled. The botched deal with Magna International Inc. had an agreement for labor leaders to contribute 265 million euros in annual savings despite the Canadian supplier’s plans to cut around 10,500 jobs. After this deal fell through, the union has so far not ruled out offering the same deal to GM. However, Opel’s European works council boss, Klaus Franz, has linked any concessions to greater independence for management in Ruesselsheim, Germany, and investment plans that would preserve all the manufacturing plants and as many jobs as possible.
