The Arnage flagship of Bentley ceased production recently, but the carmaker has in mind a future super Arnage, which will be bigger, faster and a lot more luxurious than the retired variant, and which will begin production in the latter part of 2010. The next generation Arnage is speculated to be revealed at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance this August.
Although the present model of Arnage is being left behind in the competition against rival Rolls-Royce Phantom and Maybach saloons in terms of updates, the new variant is undergoing testing in Crewe, England outside the company's main offices. Bentley is planning a break of almost an entire year beginning this September before starting the next generation, up-market Arnage' production, and this in spite of the head-start of the competition. The break is partly due to the economic reasons.
The new model, which is codenamed Project Kimberly, will be patterned greatly after a modified variant of the modular platform of Audi utilized for a skew of model ranges from the A4 sedan up to the succeeding A8 flagship.
The new Bentley model, however, will come with its own exclusive V8 powertrain with power channeled to the rear wheels through a new 8-speed automatic by ZF. Although there were speculations that the carmaker may include a new diesel powerplant in the next generation Arnage, the engine will most probably be gasoline with a capability of using E85.
Also in development is a substitute for the Arnage T, but it will not come with the W16 powerplant of the Bugatti Veyron as initially reported. The Arnage prototype indicates the design of the future model with its extra-wide B-pillar pointing to a longer wheelbase and a slightly broader track for a more dynamic drive in contrast to the current version. Bentley is hoping that the additional size and performance of the new model will bring it to the top of the luxury class.
