Upcoming Mazda RX-9 sports car to receive a new-generation rotary engine

According to the latest reports from Autocar, it appears that Mazda is well advanced with a new-generation rotary engine and intends to use it on its next-generation sports car. Dubbed RX-9 (although some sources say it will be called RX-7, again) the new car is expected to have a total weight of around 1250kg, while the total output will be somewhere around 300 hp. Dubbed 16X, the new engine is described by sources as a little bit bigger than the current 2.6-litre twin-rotor unit used by the Mazda RX-8.
For those who don’t know, the RX-8 was recently pulled out from the European market because the engine didn’t meet the latest EuroV standards. Still, the RX-8 was a massive success. The new engine is expected to be a master piece, delivering more power as well as a better fuel consumption.
If you didn’t know, we will tell you know all the things you need to know about the RX-8: the car is powered by a 1.3-liter engine delivering 232 hp when mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox, and 212 hp when using a 6-speed automatic transmission; it accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.7 seconds and delivers a fuel consumption of 16/23 mpg w/ automatic and 16/22 mpg w/ manual.
