Upcoming Volvo S60 to get revolutionary safety technology

If you´ve been eyeing Volvo's new S60 saloon that will go on sale in 2010, expect to get revolutionary safety technology that features two aspects: Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake and Pedestrian Detection system. Volvo has recently released the latest details regarding the safety technologies that will be offers on the new S60 saloon. Critics can say what they want about Volvo but the Swedish firm cannot be accused of being hasty since the safety system in this car had been ongoing for more than 10 years. The system consists of a radar in the front grille, a camera behind the inside rear-view mirror and a central control unit. The radar and camera constantly monitor the road in front of the car. While the radar's task is to detect objects and measure the distance to them, the camera determines what type of objects they are. Genius, isn´t it? The first alert that a driver gets is an audible warning together with a flashing light in the windscreen's head-up display. If the driver fails to respond to the warning and the system assesses that a collision is imminent, the car's brakes are applied with full braking power. Thomas Broberg, senior safety advisor at Volvo, enumerated the factors that should be taken into account in the system design. These are traffic behavior, road conditions and climate. He added that after those years of testing, Volvo has collected more than 500,000 kilometers of real-life data. Broberg explained that the information from these traffic tests can be used to conduct advanced computer simulations. By 2020, Broberg hopes that no one would ever be killed in an accident involving a Volvo. While previous stages were developed for the driver to avoid collisions, the focus now is to be able to boost safety for road users. Volvo is also revising its automatic braking power, from 50% to a full one.
