Following the example of European governments, the US Senate has recently approved a scrappage scheme for the US valued at $1 billion. The scrappage scheme awaits the signature of President Obama before it can be implemented.
When it gets implemented it will run for three and a half months providing customers who trade their old cars for newer, more efficient models between $3,500 and $4,500 in cash vouchers. The program will offer the auto business the boost it needs as well as manufacturers, dealers suppliers and other related businesses. The goal is to encourage buyers to opt for more fuel efficient and eco-friendly vehicles. Voting on the scrappage scheme in the House is 226-202 and in the Senate it is 92-5.
