U.S. to receive diesel-powered Vw Beetle and electric Up!

A clean diesel engine is what‚ in store for the next-generation Volkswagen Beetle, which will arrive in the US as a 2012 model, according to Volkswagen Group of America President Stefan Jacoby. Another event that that will surely excite US consumers is the arrival of the electrified version of VW's Up! hatchback in 2014. However, the arrival of the gasoline-powered version has yet to be announced. In addition, the Up! Lite, a four-seat electric concept made its world debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Ulrich Hackenberg, head of technical development for Volkswagen AG, said that the Up! Lite is a three-door car that has a two-cylinder diesel engine, a 10-kilowatt electric motor and a carbon-fiber roof. Continued after the jump! The car will be built at a plant in Germany and is slated to go on sale first in Europe. Hackenberg said that at the moment, the company is studying how much interest customers have for a car with very low fuel consumption. A detail that should be mentioned about the Up! Lite is that it weighs about 1,530 pounds, which is 900 pounds lighter than a Hyundai Accent. The Up! Hatchback, which will go on sale in Europe at the end of 2011, will not be available in the US.
