Within 24 hours after the murderer of German Porsche specialist Uwe Gemballa was arrested, there was already a conviction and a 20-year sentence was imposed. According to the Sunday Times, an arrest was made on 28-year-old Thabiso Mpshe of Pretoria last Friday. He was brought before the high court in Johannesburg that afternoon. It can be recalled that Gemballa’s remains were discovered buried in Atteridgeville on September 28.

Last February, Gemballa went to South Africa for a business deal. A day after, he had disappeared. He made a call to his wife, Christiane, to tell her he had an accident and asked her to transfer €1-million to a bank account. Police spokesman Colonel Vishnu Naidoo said that Gemballa had “no visible injuries” but that there are signs of suffocation.

Naidoo declined to reveal if Mpshe pleaded guilty or if the prosecution entered a deal with him. Naidoo also said that the reason why the arrest was kept so low key is that the investigation had to be protected. He explained that revealing details would risk jeopardizing the investigation.
