Vauxhall denies British media reports regarding U.K. debut of Ampera

Vauxhall Ampera ConceptIt turns out that the Vauxhall Ampera might be coming to the UK after all. Previously, British media reports have asserted that the Ampera won’t be coming to the UK however, Vauxhall has issued a statement denying these claims. Vauxhall clarified that while it cannot confirm it yet, a decision is expected on the choice of European plant for Ampera production anytime soon.

The Vauxhall Ampera is the European version of the Chevrolet Volt, which will be arriving in 2011. The British media have claimed that production of the Ampera will be in the US alongside the Volt as an investment in the UK would be unjustifiable due to the low demand. It was also claimed that Ampera production would shift to Europe in 2015 or 2016, when the second-generation model is scheduled to arrive. Autocar reports that a Vauxhall source says that there has been no decision on where the Ampera will be produced in Europe. However, there would have to be sufficient demand for it. He adds they’re just waiting for the right timing. When it does push through, many predict that it will be built at Ellesmere Port as the Ampera is underpinned by the new Astra.
