Vauxhall planning to add third shift

General Motors Europe expects to boost output from 120,000 to 180,000 cars at its Ellesmere Port plant near Liverpool in northwest England by switching to a three-shift operation in 2011. The move will effectively wipe out redundancies at the 2,200-worker plant that had been cited as part of GME's 9,000 Europe-wide job cuts. GME said that adding the third shift would utilize all its current labor. Starting 2010, the plant will be building the "Sports Tourer" wagon alongside the redesigned Astra five-door hatchback. Talks had taken place at the Luton van plant amid media speculation that 300 of the 1,500 workers at the plant would lose their jobs. The announcement is expected on Monday. GME revealed in a statement that it will continue to consult with each manufacturing plant in Europe until December "to finalize details of the forward plan for Opel/Vauxhall across Europe."
